The PERFECT Pre Shot Routine in Golf (5 Hacks)

When you have a pre-shot routine in golf your game will change instantly.

A pre-shot routine is one of the most important pieces of a good golf swing. As Dave Pelz said in his book Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible, “A good pre-shot ritual gives your subconscious a countdown which lets every part of your body know when things are going to happen.”

Aside from the emphasis on a good setup position, it’s probably the only thing that all PGA Tour players and elite amateur golfers have in common. Even though no two players usually have the same pre-shot routine, every good player has their own version. It’s how they get comfortable over each shot and give themselves the best chances to hit the shot they imagined.

Yet, most everyday golfers don’t have a pre-shot routine. Or if they do, it seems to change a little every round and doesn’t help them with their confidence on the course.

The reason a pre-shot routine is necessary is that it can help you build confidence for each shot (even the hard ones). It can also help you calm your nerves and hit each shot with maximum confidence.

A good pre-shot routine will also help you speed up play, minimize doubts, play better in tournaments, and score better consistently. But to reap these benefits, you need to practice it first on the range so it becomes second nature on the golf course.
