The Tempest, or The Enchanted Land, is a play adapted and revised from one of Shakespeare's most famous works, “The Tempest.” In 1674, poet and playwright Thomas Shadwell remade the text into a play that was set to music by the English music theorist and composer Matthew Locke and his team.

Matthew Locke, born in Exeter, was a chorister at Exeter Cathedral under Edward Gibbons, brother of Orlando Gibbons, famous English composer and last master of the English Renaissance style. Locke was one of the greatest British composers before Purcell and took part in the composition of many operas and masques, dramatic or comic works characterized by choreographic and musical elements in which the monarchs themselves often participated as actors. He also served King Charles II as a composer for wind music and violins. His successor in this position was Henry Purcell himself, who was greatly influenced by Locke's music and composed an ode on the occasion of his death in 1677.
