Despite the threat of the military regime’s aerial surveillance, intermittent airstrikes and indiscriminate shelling, a two-day youth exchange camp was organized and carried out from December 9 to 10, 2022 in the Salween Peace Park, Mutraw District of Kawthoolei. At the event, over 300 people representing five middle and high schools from The Nue Chet La, Toe Thay Der, Day Bu Noh, Lay Wah, and Lay Ther Kho as well as Karen youth from the Karen-Canadian Education Alliance (KCEA) visiting from Canada, Indigenous elders, and Mutraw district leaders attended. The core activities of the event included intergenerational dialogue between the Indigenous elders and young people, hands-on environmental activities like bird watching and recording of bird calls, learning and documenting the different tree species as part of a tree inventory, cultural dramatization of the twelfth cycle of the Karen seasonal calendar with the roleplay highlighting people’s livelihoods, socio-cultural activities, taboos and ritual ceremonies, and an interschool cultural song contest.
