June 17, 2013 -- After more than two weeks of protests that spread across the country, Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan deployed riot police to evict activists from the hub of the movement—Istanbul's Taksim Square and Gezi Park. On Saturday night and Sunday, police used teargas and water cannons to disperse protesters, block off the square, and make mass arrests.

Citizen video and news reports from the scene depict excessive use of force by authorities and increasing tension between pro- and anti-government civilians. The Istanbul Bar Association stated at least 400 people were detained on Sunday, and journalists and medics are reportedly among them. A German news broadcaster described a horrific scene in which protesters taking refuge in a hotel were trapped when police fired teargas into the lobby.

The brutal crackdown comes after Human Rights Watch, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and some Turkish politicians had condemned the widespread use of teargas and water cannons at rallies. Images of such violent reactions by authorities has been one factor galvanizing Turks across the country to join the movement.

The protests began in late May out of anger at plans to replace Taksim Square with commercial development, but have grown into a diverse nationwide movement expressing anger at what many Turks perceive as increasingly authoritarian policies of Prime Minister Erdogan's administration.
