"We hope that the relations with the U.S. be served and pushed towards a healthy situation, and in stopping the war against Iraq and solving the Palestinian problem will certainly serve this purpose."

STORYLINE:

The secretary-general of the Arab League said Thursday that he hoped relations between Arab countries and the United States "served and pushed towards a healthy situation."

Moussa made his comments in Cairo.

He also said that solving the Palestinian issue would improve relations between the US and the Arab world.

The Arab world is divided over US-led military action against Iraq.

Some Arab governments are allowing the United States to use their territory as a staging ground for a possible war, while others are vehemently opposed to any strike on a fellow Arab state.

Gulf states, long wary of Saddam, have gone as far as publicly calling on the Iraqi leader to step down, but other Arabs have been cool to the idea.
