HSS in New York City runs a large orthopaedic residency program training 45 residents. When COVID-19 hit the United States, it exponentially stressed the healthcare system in a matter of days. Residents, whom are key members of an academic hospital’s frontline workforce, disproportionally faced these stresses. Dr. Duretti Fufa, Associate Attending Orthopaedic Surgeon and Program Director of Hospital for Special Surgery’s Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program, discusses the key principles HSS used to guide a safe and effective resident response, one that ensured resident health, safety and well-being amidst crisis.
