The sandwich is believed to be named after John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, who is often credited with its invention. According to a popular story from Tour to London by Pierre Jean Grosley, Lord Sandwich, an avid gambler, asked for meat between slices of bread so he could eat without leaving the card table his friends began ordering “the same as Sandwich,” giving rise to the name. However, biographer N.A.M. Rodger suggests he may have created it while working at his desk, not gambling.

Before being called sandwiches, such meals were simply known as bread and meat or bread and cheese.

In the United States, the sandwich has evolved into countless variations, including classics like the cheesesteak, sloppy joe, muffuletta, Monte Cristo, po'boy, grilled cheese, BLT, club, Dagwood, French dip, peanut butter and jelly, and Pilgrim sandwiches.
