As negotiations continue about a national pharmacare plan for Canada, a new poll from the Heart & Stroke and Canadian Cancer Society has found one in four Canadians are skipping doses, splitting pills or not filling prescriptions because of cost.

It also showed 28 per cent have cut back on groceries or even delayed a mortgage or rent payment, to afford their medication. One Calgary woman even says she would go to clinics to see if they had free samples of medication because of difficulties being able to afford her prescription.

"You go to sleep at night wondering what's going to happen to you if you don't have the medication and it's just tortuous," Heather Evans said.

As Sean Previl explains, advocates say it's why a pharmacare plan is needed but has to be done right, protecting existing coverage that some Canadians already have while helping those without.
