I’ve come to realize that on the internet, everything can be perfectly staged—and misplaced trust can come with a devastating price.

I never thought I’d become the victim of a romance scam. At 32, I had a stable job, a good income, and never really lacked anything—except a serious relationship. Then I met her—the woman who would cost me both my money and my faith in love. We met on an online forum about financial investments.

She introduced herself as 28, living in Singapore, and working as a fund manager. At first, our conversations were mostly about work, but over time, they shifted into more personal territory. Her encouragement, attention, and kindness made me feel truly special. I had no reason to doubt her—she was always there when I needed someone. From warm video calls to sweet goodnight messages, she made everything feel real.

After a few months, she told me about a high-return investment project she was involved in. She said it was a rare opportunity, only open to people she trusted, and encouraged me to invest alongside her.

I was cautious at first, sending 500 million VND. When I saw the investment account showing high returns, I gradually invested more. Eventually, I had sent her 5 billion VND in total. Things started falling apart when I tried to withdraw my profits. She told me there was a fee I needed to pay to complete the process. When I hesitated, she gently reassured me, saying it would all be taken care of soon.

Then the messages became less frequent. She stopped picking up my calls. I logged back into the investment account and found it had been locked. Her social media accounts vanished without a trace. I was in shock. I contacted the bank and went to the police—but it was already too late.

Everything about her was fake. The photos and videos were stolen from other people online. I was heartbroken to realize I had fallen in love with someone who didn’t even exist. It took me a long time to process what happened and pull myself together. I didn’t just lose money—I lost my trust in people. I now understand that online, anything can be fabricated, and trusting the wrong person can cost you dearly.

I’m not sharing this story to seek sympathy. I just want to warn anyone who’s falling in love online: don’t let your emotions override your judgment. Most importantly—never send money to someone you’ve never met in person. Five billion VND was a painful price to pay for this lesson, but if my story helps someone avoid making the same mistake, then maybe some meaning can come out of all this pain.
