2021’s May 13 Federal Budget committed $298 million over 4 years to prevent suicide, self-harm, and provide support to those impacted by suicide. This is to be done through initiatives for universal aftercare and postvention services, the establishment of a National Suicide Prevention Office, and the introduction of programs aimed at helping vulnerable communities.

However, mental health and suicide prevention experts say that this is not enough and that more funds and initiatives are needed to address Australia’s rising suicide rates and provide all people with the support they need.
