Of the two species of Dowitchers that migrate to the Hawaiian Islands in the winter months, the Long-billed species (Limnodromus scolopaceus) is by far the more common. Distinguishing Short-billed from Long-billed Dowitchers in the field is extremely difficult. They are so similar, in fact, that they were considered one species until 1950. This bird was filmed on the Mānā Plains Wetland on the island of Kaua`i in early March 2024. The loral angle, the posture when feeding, and the shorter bill length compared to other Dowitchers feeding nearby lead me to believe that this is L. griseus.
