During World War II, the United States faced a unique challenge on the home front. Gas masks terrified young children, making emergency preparedness difficult. To solve this, the government partnered with artists from Walt Disney Company to design a child-friendly gas mask featuring bright colors and a familiar Mickey Mouse theme.

The idea worked. Children were far more willing to wear the masks during drills, reducing panic and resistance. However, an unexpected problem soon emerged. The paint pigments used on early prototypes could flake with heavy use, producing fine dust that was unsafe for children to inhale.

Although the masks remained mechanically functional, concerns over child health quietly halted further production. Only around one thousand of these Disney-designed gas masks are believed to survive today. Each one represents a rare and unsettling moment when wartime innovation, propaganda, and childhood safety collided.
