A massive fire engulfed a shopping mall in Karachi’s Saddar area on January 17, leaving at least 60 people dead and many others injured. The blaze reportedly started in the basement of the Gul Shopping Plaza and quickly spread through the three-storey building, affecting over 1,200 shops. Authorities confirmed that 30 victims were trapped inside a single mezzanine floor shop as the fire consumed the complex.

Firefighters and emergency services battled the inferno for nearly 36 hours, with rescue operations hampered by collapsed debris, poor ventilation, and heavy crowds blocking access. Sniffer dogs and urban search teams were deployed to locate missing persons, but the situation remained extremely dangerous. Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab announced compensation of 10 million rupees ($35,000) for each family that lost a loved one in the tragedy.

Officials highlighted serious safety and structural failures, noting that the building did not fully comply with international fire safety standards. Experts warned that Karachi’s limited fire infrastructure, with just 35 stations and 57 fire trucks, makes the city vulnerable to large-scale disasters. The incident is considered the largest fire in Karachi in over a decade, raising urgent questions about urban safety and emergency preparedness.
