Описание к видео Lone Barn Owl Chick Gets New Rescued Sibling | Full Story | Gylfie & Dryer | Robert E Fuller

Only one barn owl chick hatched from a clutch of three, so I called it Uno. But when I was given a rescued one, it was the perfect chance to let them grow up together.

ABOUT THIS FILM
____________________

This is the story of Gylfie, Dryer, Uno and Lucky. This year, barn owl pair Gylfie and Dryer decide to nest in Ash Stump and they laid 3 eggs. Dryer couldn't wait to see the eggs but Gylfie didn't let him for long.

On the 28th May Gylfie reveals a hatching chick. Barn owl incubate their eggs for around 33 days,
But after 38 days the remaining eggs didn't hatch and it looked like the eggs had failed. In a poignant moment, Dryer looks down at Uno and the two eggs, as if questioning why there is only one chick. I am worried about Uno growing up alone - she won’t have any siblings to keep her warm.

But I get a call from Jean Thorpe - founder of Ryedale Rehabilitation, she has a barn owl chick, rescued from Wetherby who’s 4 siblings sadly died due to lack of food and it's in need of a new home.

Lucky looks to be around 21 days old and I hope that with Gylfie’s strong maternal instincts, she could be the perfect foster mother. And a perfect foster sibling to Uno who is around 15 days old
6 days is a normal gap between siblings, so I’m hopeful this will work

I waste no time in getting Lucky into the nest. Uno looks nervous at first, laying down on the nest floor, but soon gets up and wanders closer to Lucky and starts preening her new sibling. Next, Gylfie returns and after a brief moment of hesitation comes into the nest. Soon Gylfie and Lucky are greeting each other,

Lucky settles in well and grows fast thanks to Dryer’s hard work delivering food.
As the two owlets are developing well and keeping each other warm, Gylfie no longer needs to spend time in the nest and spends her days with Dryer in next door Beech Stump, preparing for a second clutch.

Soon I can see Lucky’s adult feathers coming through and before long she is in the entrance. After a couple of feeds, and some pouncing practise, Lucky takes her first flight from the nest.

I know it won’t be long before Uno fledges, so it’s time to get her a BTO ring with a unique number
To help monitor her over her lifetime. Jean Thorpe is also a licenced bird ringer and has come to help out. This ring number and her weight will be sent off to the BTO for them to store in their database

That evening, a very tentative Uno takes the leap of faith and fledges for the first time
What a fantastic end to a great story!
