In this video, I head out into the countryside of northern Kentucky before sunrise to photograph fall landscapes on a cloudy morning using the Leica Q. With heavy cloud cover and muted light, this shoot becomes a real-world example of what landscape photography often looks like when conditions don’t cooperate.

I talk through my camera settings, exposure choices, and why I enjoy using the Leica Q for simple, no-nonsense photography. As the morning unfolds, it becomes clear that the fall colors are far more muted than expected—a trend I’ve been seeing throughout northern Kentucky, Indiana, and even reports from the Red River Gorge.

This video is less about perfect sunrises and dramatic color and more about adapting to flat light, managing expectations, and understanding how weather patterns can impact fall foliage. I also share thoughts on why this year’s fall colors seem subdued, based on recent weather conditions, and compare what I’m seeing now to past experiences photographing fall in New England.
