Protesters across Russia took to the streets to show their disapproval of the “partial mobilization” policy announced by President Vladimir Putin.

At least 1,252 people from 38 cities were detained, according to OVD-Info, a human rights watchdog.

In Moscow, protesters chanted, “Send Putin to the trenches!” and “Let our children live!”

Putin’s announcement aims to press 300,000 reservists into military service, escalating the war in Ukraine.

Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu stated that only those with prior military experience would be drafted.

However, many Russians fear broader conscription could be on the horizon, potentially creating domestic unrest.

In Tomsk, a woman holding a sign saying “Hug me if you are also scared” was dragged away by police.

In Novosibirsk, a man declared, “I don’t want to die for Putin and for you,” before being detained.

Protest is effectively criminalized in Russia, with severe penalties for dissent.

The mobilization could rattle the Russian public, as most men of military age are considered reservists.

Ivan Kurilla, a professor of history and international relations, noted, “Mobilization raises the stakes not only in war but also in domestic politics.” A petition against the mobilization gathered almost 300,000 signatures by Wednesday evening.
