This was Roberto Rossellini's revelation, a harrowing drama about the Nazi occupation of Rome and the brave few who struggled against it.

This film introduces Neorealism in Italian cinema, the effect of which has continued for decades. Our very own Indian director Satyajit Ray was greatly influenced by his movies and this neorealism movement. I can not believe there can be any better audiovisual medium that can show the devastating condition of Rome at the time of the Second World War. Even after the release of this film, it was not welcomed by Italy or most of Europe. But the indomitable spirit of Rossellini and the mastery in filmmaking has been comprehended in later decades. This landmark film took the Grand Prix at Cannes and received a nomination for Best Writing at the 1947 Academy Awards.
