Basic Principle
Synchronous Speed is the speed at which the magnetic field rotates, determined by the frequency of the AC supply and the number of poles in the motor. It is calculated as:

Rotor Induction:

Torque Production:

Why Induction Motor Cannot Run at Synchronous Speed
Relative Motion Required: For induction to occur, there must be relative motion between the rotating magnetic field of the stator and the rotor. This relative motion is called slip.

Slip is defined as the difference between synchronous speed and rotor speed (The rotor needs to lag behind the synchronous speed to maintain this slip.

No Induction at Synchronous Speed: If the rotor were to reach synchronous speed , the relative motion would be zero. This means no current would be induced in the rotor, and hence no torque would be generated. Without torque, the rotor cannot sustain motion and would slow down, increasing the slip again.

Equilibrium of Slip: The rotor speed stabilizes at a point slightly less than synchronous speed. At this point, the slip is small but sufficient to induce the necessary current in the rotor to produce the required torque.
