Описание к видео "I Gotta Drive" Jan & Dean VS The Matadors September 1963 Leon Russell David Gates

Here is one of many instances where the same backing tracks were used for two different artists doing the same song. "I Gotta Drive" was written by Barry Mann and Roger Christian and appeared on two releases. Jan & Dean had it on their Liberty Records album Drag City and The Matadors got a single with it on Colpix Records.
The Matadors: Tony Minichiello, Vic Diaz and Manuel Sanchez, were schoolmates of Jan Berry's at University High and were backing singers for Jan & Dean on the albums Surf City and Drag City. Berry led the September 13, 1963 session that "I Gotta Drive" was tracked during and sang lead on both versions. Berry did the spoken intro on his and Dean's version, while his girlfriend Jill Gibson led of The Matadors version. For that tracking session, Ray Pohlman was the leader over nearly a dozen musicians that included drummers Hal Blaine and Earl Palmer and as guitarists: Glen Campbell, Tommy Tedesco, Bill Pitman and David Gates from Tulsa, Oklahoma. David was a schoolmate of Leon Russell's at Will Rogers High there and Russell was also on the "I Gotta Drive" session as keyboard player. Jan Berry had been working with David Gates around the same time, as he arranged Johnny Crawford's "Judy Loves Me" which was on a Del-Fi label single opposite Johnny's cover of Gates' "Living In The Past." "I Gotta Drive" can be found on Vol. 2 of the 1993 Sundazed cd set Surf & Drag, along with many other songs from the Colpix, Dimension, Vault and Josie labels.
