The major cause of human suffering today is identification with thoughts.

One method to begin to liberate ourselves from thought identification is a silent meditation of practicing observing our thoughts without reacting to our thoughts.

Thoughts (in and of themselves) cannot harm us unless we are identified with them as having an absolute truth (at which point thoughts may become as dangerous as a real external threat.)
