Kotaku Australia Is SHUTTING DOWN!! In a move that’s no surprise, Kotaku, Vice, Gizmodo, Refinery29, and Lifehacker will stop publishing in Australia. This is part of a plan to save money for Pedestrian Group, leading to many job cuts.

Matt Rowley, CEO of Pedestrian Group, announced on Monday that they are focusing on their own Pedestrian brands. “We’ve decided to focus on the brands we fully own and control,” he said. “This will affect some roles, and we’ll contact those people soon.”

One of the people losing their job is Kotaku Australia’s Managing Editor, David Smith. He’s now joining YouTuber Smash JT’s "Kotaku Detected" site. Smith was known for wanting to ban gamers for abusive voice chat comments.

While many good people will lose their jobs, this could be a positive change for games journalism. Kotaku has often been against gamers, especially during the Sweet Baby Inc controversy, also known as Gamergate 2.

This puts pressure on other games media companies, many of which have also had layoffs. Journalists often clash with gamers, like Alyssa Mercante, Senior Editor at Kotaku, known for her frequent attacks on gamers.

Kotaku is still looking for a new Editor in Chief to manage its staff. What will these Australian closures mean for Kotaku and its parent company, G/O Media? Only time will tell, and it’s not on their side.
