Lieutenant Junior Grade George H.W. Bush, USNR, served 1942–1955

Former President George Herbert Walker Bush spoke with the U.S. Naval Institute on 27 April 2007. He tells the harrowing details of how he narrowly survived getting shot down near the island of Chichi Jima in the Pacific during WWII. A Naval aviator, Bush bailed out after his TBM Avenger torpedo bomber caught fire, and fortunately was picked up by the submarine USS Finback (SS-230).

The mission of the U.S. Naval Institute is to provide an independent forum for those who dare to read, think, speak, and write to advance the professional, literary, and scientific understanding of sea power and other issues critical to global security.
