Recently, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) approved the increment of the electricity tariff for Nigeria’s Band A customers to N225/kilowatt hour from N66. NERC explained that the increment is cost-reflective, and aligns with current realities in inflation, cost of natural gas, and will drastically reduce government’s cost burden for electricity subsidy, among others.
Three weeks down the line, the increment is still misunderstood by consumers. They argue that it is ill-timed, considering Nigeria is only gradually recovering from inflation and their purchasing power is limited. In this interview with the NESG TV, Engr Belije Madu, Thematic Lead, NESG Policy Commission, analyses the pros and cons of the tariff increase and suggests strategies that can help consumers cope
