It is with great sadness WCSO shares the passing of K9 Stark.

We thought Stark might be the first dog to live forever. Stark recovered from bilateral knee surgery and continued working as hard as ever. He recovered from having a ruptured spleen removed and continued working as hard as ever. Stark lost some of the function of his back legs due to a degenerative disease in the discs in his back, and he unwillingly retired at the end of 2022. Congestive heart disease eventually proved Stark was mortal.

Stark joined the Washington County Sheriff’s Office family in 2012 as Corporal Micah Akin’s partner and he hit the ground running – literally. Everyone knew if you were going to cover Cpl. Akin and Stark on a track you needed to limber up and swap your work boots for a pair of trainers. Stark worked as a patrol dog for 10 years, with the first eight of those years dual-certified as a narcotic detection dog. You could try to run from Stark, and you could try to hide, but it was almost guaranteed that he was going to find you and he was going to find your drugs.

If Stark did anything better than finding suspects and their drugs, it was putting up with wearing embarrassing costumes whenever Cpl. Akin deemed it necessary. Stark taught Cpl. Akin patience, toughness, and resilience, and he was able to apply those lessons to his career at the Sheriff’s Office. Stark wasn’t just a member of the Sheriff’s Office family, but a beloved member of Cpl. Akin’s family as well. He will be missed by all.
