In this episode, we go behind the scenes to explore the full leather tanning process, from raw cowhide to finished leather. Discover how Rémy Carriat transforms wet blue hides, that are chrome-tanned but not yet dried, dyed, or finished, into the luxurious leathers that form the base of Peter Nitz’s bespoke creations.

You'll be able to learn about the full tanning process. From meticulous dyeing to softening and grading, every step is a testament to Rémy Carriat’s commitment to craftsmanship, quality, and heritage.

STEP 1: THE DYEING PROCESS
Wet blue skins go into the dyeing drums. First, they are neutralized to achieve the perfect pH, then color is added.

STEP 2: THE DRYING & HUMIDIFYING PROCESS
Skins are carefully left to reach the right humidity level, which varies depending on weather conditions, to prepare them for the next steps.

STEP 3: THE DYE SPRAYING PROCESS
A precise thin layer of pigment is applied to achieve the exact color requested by clients and cover minor imperfections.

STEP 4: THE DRYING, SOFTENING, & TUMBLING PROCESS
Skins go through manual toggling machines, vacuum drying, or ventilated rooms depending on the type of leather. They are then softened and tumbled in square drums to bring out the grain and perfect texture. Modern drums also allow humidity adjustments to enhance color and feel.

STEP 5: QUALITY CONTROL & SHIPPING
Each hide is inspected and graded according to customer requirements. Finished skins are rolled onto carton tubes or boxed for shipment worldwide.
