In April 2024, Chinese doctors claimed to have cured Type 2 diabetes in a 59-year-old man who had been living with the condition for 25 years, using stem cells (labgrown) transplant. The study, carried out by doctors from Shanghai Changzheng Hospital, was published in the Cell Discovery journal.

The man had lost most pancreatic islet function (crucial for regulating blood sugar levels in the body) and was dependent on multiple insulin shots in a day and was at high risk for complications. He had also undergone a kidney transplant in 2017. He underwent stem cell transplant in 2021 and has been completely weaned off insulin for 33 months, the doctors claimed.
