Bengaluru-based startup Voxelgrids has unveiled India’s first indigenously designed 1.5 Tesla MRI scanner, recently installed at Chandrapur Cancer Care Foundation in Nagpur. This innovation, led by Dr. Arjun Arunachalam, comes at a time when India has only around 5000 MRI scanners for 1.4 billion people and still imports nearly 80–85% of its medical equipment.

What makes this system special is that it is not just “Made in India” but also a major technical upgrade over many existing designs. Voxelgrids’ MRI uses a cryogen-free, conduction‑cooled system that eliminates the need for liquid helium, making it simpler to maintain and up to about 40% cheaper than traditional MRI scanners.
