A Concert of contemporary Indian music
with French psychedelia and jazz overtones
The Alliance Française du Bengale, in conjunction with the Calcutta School of Music, and Tollygunge Club organize this Franco-Indian concert, Kolkata Jam Masala at Tollygunge
Club AC Shamiana on Friday, May 12, 2017.
KJM is a band exploring Indian raagas with a pinch of rock‘n’roll and psychedelia. On one
hand we have an Indian classical virtuoso Supriyo Dutta, and on the other, musicians from
the rock and psychedelic jazz scene - Paul Brook, ‘Bumpy’ and Gaurab Chatterjee. More than
a fusion, it can be called contemporary Indian music. In this project, tracks are improvised
on Indian raagas.
During this live concert, the musicians played in a spontaneous way. The driving force
behind KJM’s music is to bring out the artist’s honest expression at a given moment and
thus going beyond the established structures or paradigms of music. As a ‘Bitches Brew’
(Miles Davis) for African American jazz, KJM explores Indian psychedelia and the result is
stunning. The spiritual aspect of traditional music is maintained but the shape is discussed,
revised and polyphony exacerbated.
Supriyo Dutta is a rising star in Hindustani Vocal Classical music. He frequently collaborates
with musicians of repute for live performances and composes music for various productions.
Paul Brook is a guitarist, producer and owner of a recording studio in Paris. He builds his
musical universe around psychedelic culture and free improvisation.
Mainak Nag Chowdhury, also known as ‘Bumpy’ in the national and international music
scene, has worked extensively as a bass player and music producer in India and all over the
world.
Gaurab Chatterjee is a drummer and a composer based out of Kolkata, India. He has been
associated with the Kolkata based rock band Lakkhichhara since its inception and also with
the critically acclaimed alt jazz fusion line-up Kendraka since 2012.
Zoe Brook follows an unusual path, oscillating between intellectual and artistic training. She
has been performing as a VJ artist since 2015. In her performances, images are an invitation
to reflect on the human condition and an exploration of the digital pictorial universe.
