🚨 Major Development in Hunters Point Shipyard Cleanup 🚨

Tetra Tech EC Inc., a former Navy contractor, has agreed to a $97 million settlement over allegations of fraudulent cleanup practices at San Francisco's Hunters Point Naval Shipyard. The U.S. Department of Justice joined the lawsuit in 2018, which was initially filed by whistleblowers in 2013. The settlement includes $57 million under the False Claims Act and $40 million under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act. This agreement awaits court approval and a 30-day public comment period.

The Hunters Point Shipyard, a former naval base, has been undergoing extensive cleanup due to contamination from its past use, including activities by the Naval Radiological Defense Laboratory. The area has been designated a Superfund site, requiring long-term remediation efforts. The alleged fraudulent activities by Tetra Tech EC have raised concerns about the integrity of the cleanup process and the safety of future developments in the area.

Several pending legal actions continue to address environmental and health concerns:

Greenaction's Federal Lawsuit: In June 2024, Greenaction for Health and Environmental Justice filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Navy and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), alleging inadequate cleanup efforts at the Superfund site. The suit demands comprehensive retesting and stricter oversight to ensure community safety.

SFPD Officers' Legal Action: A group of San Francisco Police Department officers stationed at the shipyard's Building 606 sued the U.S. Navy in 2020, claiming insufficient monitoring of Tetra Tech's cleanup, which exposed them to potential radioactive contamination. The case is currently under review by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Homeowners' Settlement: In April 2022, a federal judge approved a $6.3 million settlement for homeowners in the San Francisco Shipyard development. The plaintiffs alleged that developers sold properties without adequately disclosing the area's toxic history and contamination concerns.

These ongoing legal proceedings highlight the persistent challenges in ensuring a thorough and transparent cleanup of the Hunters Point Shipyard, reflecting the community's demand for environmental justice and accountability.
