Clay smearing is an important process in normal faulting, as it can stop the flow of fluids through a fault. The effectiveness of this process however strongly depends on the type and the strength of the clay. This movie comes from the MSc thesis of Joyce Schmatz (RWTH University). This movie shows an experiment with two 5 cm thick, soft clay layers separated by a thin (5 mm) sand layer. Faults initiate at various locations and evolve to a broad and complex fault zone.
In the second half of the movie, the results of a strain analysis, using Particle Image Analysis (PIV) software is shown.
