Susan Watson, a 20-year-old student from a small American town, was on the verge of being expelled from college. Her academic performance had been lacking, and she was close to losing her place at the prestigious institution for which her parents had worked tirelessly. Susan managed to negotiate with most of her professors, but physics remained an insurmountable barrier. Physics was taught by Thomas Bryant, a 52-year-old principled instructor. Susan knew that persuading him would be difficult, but she saw no other option. Susan began asking Thomas for extra tutoring sessions after class. Thomas, seeing her desperate attempts to improve her performance, agreed. They held several meetings during which Susan tried to establish rapport with the professor, making subtle hints about her willingness to do anything for a good grade.
