An acoustic cover of "Hard Luck Woman" by Kiss from their 1976 album Rock and Roll Over for Casablanca Records.
Words and music by Paul Stanley
If never I met you
I'd never have seen you cry
If not for the first hello
We'd never have to say goodbye
If never I held you
My feelings would never show
It's time I start walkin'
But there's so much you'll never know
I keep telling you hard luck woman
You ain't a hard luck woman
Rags, the sailor's only daughter
A child of the water
Too proud to be a queen
Rags, I really love you
I can't forget about you
You'll be a hard luck woman
Baby, 'til you find your man
Before I go let me kiss you
And wipe the tears from your eyes
I don't wanna hurt you, girl
You know I could never lie
I keep telling you hard luck woman
You ain't a hard luck woman
You'll be a hard luck woman
Baby, 'til you find your man
Rags, the sailor's only daughter
A child of the water
Too proud to be a queen
Rags, I really love you
I can't forget about you
You'll be a hard luck woman
Baby, 'til you find your man
You'll be a hard luck woman
Baby, 'til you find your man
Woah-woah, bye bye
So long, don't cry
I gotta keep on movin, oh keep movin'
I'm just packin' my bags, don't cry
Song Facts
"Hard Luck Woman" is a song by American hard rock band Kiss and the lead single from their 1976 album Rock and Roll Over. It was originally written by Paul Stanley as a possible track for Rod Stewart. But after the success of the soft rock ballad "Beth", Kiss decided to keep it for themselves as a follow-up.
Stanley has stated his admiration and love of Rod Stewart's music numerous times, and that "Hard Luck Woman" was inspired by Stewart. Especially from tunes likes "Maggie May" and "You Wear It Well". The nautical themed song "Brandy" by American pop-rock band Looking Glass served as Stanley's lyrical inspiration.
Sung by Peter Criss, the single was an attempt to follow the success of the hit single "Beth". Which was released earlier in the year and also sung by Criss as a love song. According to Billboard Magazine, Criss' vocal performance sounds similar to Rod Stewart. It proved to be a top 20 hit in the US, peaking at number 15.
A version of "Hard Luck Woman" appears on Kiss's 1977 Alive II. Kiss also performed the tune during their MTV Unplugged appearance with Stanley on vocals. It did not appear on the CD of the performance, but it was one of five bonus tracks on the DVD.
Alluding to the style of "Hard Luck Woman", Steven Bailey called the song an exemplar of "gentle folk rock".
Cash Box said that the song is moving away from heavy metal and that "the lead vocal is not unlike Rod Stewart — there's a growling, bluesy intensity, centered around acoustic rhythm work."
In 1994, country star Garth Brooks recorded "Hard Luck Woman" for the tribute album Kiss My Ass: Classic Kiss Regrooved, with Kiss themselves providing the instrumentation. Kiss and Brooks performed the tune on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in promotion of the album.
Corey Taylor performed the song acoustically during his Live in London show at KOKO in on May 8th, 2016.
The Hold Steady did an electrified cover version of "Hard Luck Woman" on their 2014 covers EP, RAGS.
Rock and Roll Over is the fifth studio album by American rock band Kiss. It was released on November 11, 1976 by Casablanca Records. The album was recorded at the Star Theatre in Nanuet, New York with notable producer Eddie Kramer. Rock and Roll Over contains the songs "Hard Luck Woman" and "Calling Dr. Love", which became hit singles in the United States.
To get the proper drum sound, Peter Criss recorded his tracks in a bathroom, communicating via video-link with the rest of the band. This is the first Kiss album to not feature a writing credit from Ace Frehley.
The cover artwork for Rock and Roll Over is by Michael Doret, who worked with Kiss again on 2009's Sonic Boom. Inside the sleeve was a sticker of the cover art and a glossy photo press release pamphlet. The live album Kings Among Scotland, by Anthrax, pays homage to the artwork.
Eddie Kramer recorded with the same special tube microphones that he had used with Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin. Working 16-17 hours a day, Kramer attempted to capture the live sound of the band by utilizing the entire building. Ace, Paul and Gene's amplifiers were placed under the stage in separate dressing rooms to prevent bleed into the drum mics. Vocals were sometimes done in hallways.
Modern reviews of Rock and Roll Over are generally positive. Greg Prato of AllMusic largely praised the album for the band's "return to the raw hard rock of their first four albums", proclaiming it "one of Kiss' most consistent records".
