A Tribute to the 1600 Hakka Generals who served during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945)

During the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945), China's National Revolutionary Army was organized into 12 war zones, 40 army groups and 120 armies with 5 million soldiers.

In 1937, the Nationalists and Communists who were fighting a civil war against each other formed a "bloc without an alliance" known as the United Front to fight the invading Japanese Imperial army.

Hakka people had always been at the forefront of every major revolution and defending their homeland against foreign aggression in modern Chinese history. There had always been a tradition of joining the military and heeding calls to defend against intruders. During the Resistance War against Japanese Aggression, Hakka youths, including those underaged, volunteered for the army even before the conscription order came. General Xue Yue had three brothers and five cousins who were lieutenant generals and major generals during the war. Major General Li Ziliang and his three brothers fought together at the major Chinese victories of the Battles of Changsha. The Wen clan in Bingchun town in Meixian, Guangdong, which had a population of 40000 in 2017 produced 200 military officers during the eight-year resistance war. Joining the war en masse was the norm rather than the exception in Hakka areas.

The stoic Hakka people's ability to overcome extreme hardship, indomitable courage, toughness and fearlessness character traits, together with their strong national and ethnic consciousness, and keener awareness of how the larger political processes can affect individual lives were the major factors that prompted them to answer the nation's call to resist the Japanese army. In addition, practising kung fu was a way of life, women included, in the Hakka villages, which put them in good stead for the military; and for centuries, Hakka villages had always been in a semi-military state whereby villagers were always in preparation to fight off any intruders.

The Japanese first encounter with the Hakka people was when they faced stiff resistance from the Hakka militias in Taiwan for five months when the Japanese went to take control of the island in 1895. The Japanese started to do an in-depth studying of the Hakka people after the First Battle of Shanghai in 1931 after they were impressed by the bravery of the courageous 19th Route Army which defended Shanghai. The Chinese troops which was made up of mostly Hakka had managed to force the numerically and militarily superior Japanese army to a stalemate.

Zhang Fakui, the Commander-in-Chief of the Republic of China Army in 1945, stated in his autobiography:- “The Hakka people are able to mould outstanding military men, their hardworking conduct having been developed through years of arduous livelihood in the mountainous regions. Praises of the Guangdong spirit by the Japanese actually refer to the Hakka spirit. A big majority of the officers and soldiers in the Guangdong army are Hakka. The distinguished successes of Hakka military men have been attested by the modern history of China.”

A total of more than 1600 Hakka generals, including those who were promoted after the war, fought the Japanese during the eight-year resistance war.
