Siddiq Baloch was one of the senior journalists who received the Presidential Award of ‘Tamgha e Imtiaz’ at a simple.

Siddiq Baloch was born on August 10, 1940, in Karachi. He got primary education from school established by Maulana Mohammad Ali Johar in Rexer Lane locality of Lyari. He completed his secondary education from S.M. Lyari School, a branch of the Sindh Madrassatul Islam.

He was graduated from the S.M. College Karachi in 1964. He led the college football team and won the inter-college Football Tournament for two decades without any break. He was elected President of the S.M. College Students’ Union.

During college days, he visited former East Pakistan and attended a football training camp held there in 1961.

He actively participated in students’ agitation against the Three-Year Degree Course and also against the military Government of Field Marshal Ayub Khan.

He got Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Karachi in 1966. He also led the football team of the Pakistan Universities in the same year.

Soon after completing education he was appointed as a lecturer in the newly establish Baloch Intermediate College, Karachi. In the same year, he joined DAWN as trainee sub-Editor.

During a visit to Balochistan and providing extensive coverage to the Provincial Government, led by Sardar Ataullah Mengal, in 1972, he was appointed as Press Secretary to the Governor of Balochistan, late Mir Ghous Bakhsh Bizenjo. He was forced to resign from DAWN for lack of skilled manpower to handle the media in Balochistan. He remained official spokesman of the Government of Balochistan during the stormy days before the dismissal of the Governor and removal of the elected Government.

He performed his duties as Press Secretary to the Governor for merely four months and later on he was arrested by the PPP Government of late Z.A. Bhutto. He was implicated in first conspiracy case against 28 political opponents of the Government. Later on he was also implicated in the Hyderabad Conspiracy Case and remained in Hyderabad Prison till the military ruler General Ziaul Haq ordered release of all accused persons withdrawing all cases, most of them concocted, against them.

The day after his release, Mr. Baluch joined DAWN again as Reporter covering the events in Balochistan. Soon afterwards he was transferred to news desk.

Being a junior sub-editor, he brought out a 24-page regular edition of DAWN single handedly for which he was given a certificate from the editor. Later on he was transferred to Reporting team covering mega events and highly sensitive issues in Karachi for two decades.

He remained member of the Governing Body of the Karachi Press Club for quarters of a century. Once elected as Vice-President of the Press Club. He was the acting President for most of the year as President gone on long leave for ten months.

For over a decade, he brought out special yearly supplement of daily DAWN on Balochistan issues regularly. One of the supplements in mid-1980s comprised of 100 pages which Mr. Baluch wrote singlehandedly and published it on the scheduled date.

Mr. Baloch was President of the Karachi Union of Journalists for two consecutive tenures. In 1990, he resigned from DAWN newspaper for professional reasons and brought out first Sindh Express, English daily from Karachi with help of a former colleague. Later on he brought out the Balochistan Express from Quetta in 1990 and to this date he is editing the newspaper.

During initial years of 2000s, he brought out an Urdu Daily Azadi that became very popular among the local readers all over Balochistan for its entirely professional approach.

He remained Member of the Federal Government nominated Press Commission of Pakistan. Later on he was a nominee of the Council for Newspaper Editors of Pakistan (CPNE) for the Press Council of Pakistan for a single tenure.

He was elected as Vice President of the CPNE for two terms and President of the Balochistan Editors’ Council for two terms.

He is presently editing Daily Balochistan Express (English) and Daily Azadi (Urdu). He is one of the leading analysts of the country and popular in the national and international media for his candid comments on events
