I was starting my 8 thousandth Fortnite stream when the 2024 presidential election results finally hit me...
About the 2024 United States presidential election (per Wikipedia):
The 2024 United States presidential election was the 60th quadrennial presidential election, held on Tuesday, November 5, 2024. The Republican ticket of former president Donald Trump and Ohio senator JD Vance defeated the Democratic ticket of incumbent vice president Kamala Harris and Minnesota governor Tim Walz. Trump is scheduled to be inaugurated as the 47th president of the United States on January 20, 2025, after formal election by the United States Electoral College.
The incumbent president, Joe Biden of the Democratic Party, initially ran for re-election, and became the party's presumptive nominee, facing little opposition; however, a poor presidential debate performance in June 2024 intensified concerns about his age and health, and led to calls within his party for him to leave the race. Although initially adamant on remaining in the race, Biden withdrew on July 21, becoming the first eligible incumbent president to withdraw from the race since Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968. He endorsed Harris, who was voted the party's nominee by the delegates on August 5. Harris selected Walz as her running mate.
Biden's predecessor, Trump, a member of the Republican Party, ran for re-election for a second, non-consecutive term, after losing to Biden in 2020. He was nominated during the 2024 Republican National Convention along with his running mate, Vance, after experiencing limited opposition during the Republican primaries. The Trump campaign was noted for making many false and misleading statements, including the false claims that the 2020 election was stolen from Trump, engaging in anti-immigrant fearmongering, and promoting conspiracy theories. Historians and scholars have characterized Trump's rhetoric and behavior as embracing far-right extremism and exhibiting increasingly authoritarian and dehumanizing language toward his political opponents, likening it to populist movements, with some comparing it to fascism in ways considered unprecedented for a U.S. political candidate and a continued breaking of political norms.
In May 2024, Trump was found guilty on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, becoming the first former U.S. president to be convicted of a crime. He remains under multiple indictments for his attempts to overturn the 2020 election, his role in the January 6 attack, and his election racketeering prosecution in the state of Georgia. Trump survived two assassination attempts in the months before the election, the first in Pennsylvania and the second in Florida.
The presidential election took place at the same time as elections for 34 seats in the U.S. Senate, all seats in the U.S. House, 11 state governorships, and legislatures in 44 states. Key swing states for the presidential election included Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Leading campaign issues were abortion, climate change, democracy, the economy, education, foreign policy (including U.S. support for Israel in the Israel–Hamas war), healthcare, immigration, and LGBTQ rights. The economy had consistently been cited by voters in polls as being the most important issue in the election.
Trump and Vance were projected by major media outlets in the dawn of November 6 as the 47th president and 50th vice president of the United States respectively, with Trump winning the electoral vote and the national popular vote, unlike in 2016. Harris conceded the race in a phone call to Trump on November 6 and delivered a concession speech later that day.
Trump became the second president to be elected to a non-consecutive second term, 132 years after Grover Cleveland won the 1892 election; Trump is also the oldest person ever elected president, at the age of 78. Harris is the first sitting vice president to be defeated in the presidential election since Al Gore lost to George W. Bush in 2000 and the first Democratic presidential nominee to lose the national popular vote since John Kerry in 2004, also to Bush.
