Genotoxic substances can damage DNA, the genetic material of cells. The presence of a single genotoxic molecule can lead to genetic mutations and cause adverse health effects including hereditary diseases and cancer. No amount of a genotoxic substance can truly be considered safe. Therefore these substances should not be intentionally added to the food chain.
