On the occasion of World Environment Day, Prof. Mohammad Rihan, Director General, National Institute of Solar Energy, delivered a compelling message at the 5th Edition of the Good Air Summit & Awards — underscoring the urgent need to rethink how we produce and consume energy.

He emphasized that the decarbonization of electricity must begin with a three-step approach:
Energy Conservation – encouraging behavioral change and awareness at the grassroots level.
Energy Efficiency – optimizing how we use energy to reduce waste.
Shift to Renewable Sources – with a strong focus on solar energy, which holds immense potential for a sun-rich nation like India.

Prof. Rihan pointed out that solar power isn’t just about cutting carbon emissions — it’s a key pathway to achieving energy independence, empowering households, institutions, and industries alike.

However, he cautioned that installing solar panels is not the final solution. Energy must still be conserved, even if it’s renewable. He advocated for a more holistic approach:
🔁 Reducing material use in panel production
🔄 Reusing components in applications like street lighting
♻ Ensuring responsible recycling of solar equipment at the end of its lifecycle.

His insights serve as a reminder that clean energy is not just about innovation — it's about responsibility, circularity, and sustainable action.
