Описание к видео Angels in Amplifiers - I'm Alright (High Dynamic Range '1983 Mix 'n Master by SMS2023.DE) Rock Music

"I'm Alright" by Angels in Amplifiers (25. Feb. 2014)
This version: "High Dynamic Range '1983 Mix 'n Master".
Mixed and mastered by SMS2023.de MUSIC PRODUCTIONS in SEP-OCT/2023.
Thanks to the band and to cambridge-mt.com for providing the multitracks.

This is a rock song by Angels in Amplifiers. It is actually the 1st Mix 'n Master I have done 2 months after re-starting this hobby in AUG/2023. Best listenend to in higher resolution, e.g. in 1080p and on a nice stereo/HP.

Side note: at the start of the song (Acoustic Guitar 1) it seems there was a switch of the pickup selector being made ("click"). This song is being mixed for 10+ years now and about every version seems to have that click still in it... I have cleaned that.

About me:
My name is Stefan, I've re-started my music production journey in AUG/2023 after a long break. When I was a young adult I've had my first small home recording studio with some vintage synthesizers to experiment and self-study the topics of music production, mixing, sound design, composing, MIDI sequencing... I've then written synthesizer patches for several years until my job and family responsibilities took over a bigger portion of my life and this hobby had to be put on hold. I'm back... 18+ years later, able to finally produce music again... passionate, determined and full of ideas that grew over a long period.

When I think about good sounding music I believe a huge portion is about the balance and finding the right sweetspot while recording and mixing - and not again destroying the results with inferior mastering.

So what is this "High Dynamic Range" about?

For me personally the dynamic range of music: the difference between the quietest and loudest volume, is a fundamental aspect.

I can hardly enjoy most of modern pop, rock or metal music like I enjoy recordings from the ~1970s to the early-mid 1990s. Over the decades I have collected, compared and ripped original albums and single tracks with varying dynamic ranges from different international (CD) pressings, searching for the best ones, as well as making high-dynamic stereo mixdowns from 5.1 multi-channel formats. Vinyl-rips have been an option, too, esp. 45rpms.

After the start of the loudness-war in approx. ~1993 until today the quality and complexity of too many popular music productions has since declined IMHO - or differently put: things could sound so much better, if music would be written and mastered differently with us listeners in mind and not just for the loudness or the compatibility of the algorithm for popular streaming-services. IMHO there is a reason why older records and productions can be listenend to and enjoyed 500+ times, while many of the more recent popular music often leads to listening-fatigue and soon to its replacement with different music after only several spins, until this circle repeats itself.
(🆕🔄🔜😖🔜)🔄.

The 'prior, musical way' is the kind of approach I take and target for real sms2023 productions. No brickwall-limiting + loudness maximizing or unnecessary dynamic range reduction just for the sake of it, and never there or with an amount where it starts to hurt the musicality of the song, the expression of an individual instrument or a track in my opinion.
Some of my work will sound like earlier productions.

If you can't hear or know the difference between music with DR8, DR9, DR10, DR11, DR12 or DR13+, compare the same record with different self-measured and confirmed dynamic ranges first, then get your hearing adjusted and wowed by the added depth, nuanced detail and emotion offered by a higher dynamic range. Then go back to modern highly-squashed music with DR4, DR5, DR6 or DR7 and compare the difference.
I firmly believe one will never go back once the correlation of properly done & sounding music and its dynamic range is understood.

This public dynamic range database is a good starting point to dig into this topic: https://dr.loudness-war.info/

As is this Wikipedia article about the "loudness war" or "loudness race": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudnes...

Raising the awareness for this particular matter for more people and music enthusiasts is one pillar of my work and vision.

This particular production was actually the first since I've re-started this hobby, it was tasked as a mixing and mastering exercise before starting to feel ready to write and produce my own music.

Note: the mixing desk and studio shown in the video, thumbnail, website and header on my channel is not (!) mine or in use.🤘

I also offer to mix & master music for locals (South Germany, near Karlsruhe) or interested musicians with first recordings or ideas, if fitting for both sides. I do work full-time in a non-music industry but music is a passionate side-project for me to live out the sound-loving, experimental and detail-oriented side of me.

Enjoy.
