As someone who is into locksport (recreational lockpicking [of own locks]), I have a case full of lockpicks, padlocks and handcuffs. I have noticed over time that not all handcuff keys are equal and some brands work in more models while some don't work. It can be very confusing and frustrating.

This video demonstrates how different brands of handcuffs' keys are not always universal. This can cause problems when one person needs to unlock the handcuffs of someone else who uses a different brand. This is more of a problem in America where different people like to use different brands. Also if someone was held hostage and an officer attempts to free them from handcuffs, if non-standard brands were used, there is less of a guarantee that their key would work.

Step in, the TOOOL (The Open Organization Of Lockpickers) Ultimate Handcuff Key. It's dimensions are such, that it can operate a very wide array of brands and models of handcuffs from all around the world, including some high security models such as ASP 2 split pawl model and Yuil's 2 split pawl model. There is a bit of a trick to using it with handcuffs that use 3 pawl bars, which is covered and explained in this video.

Sometimes emergency personnel need to free a hostage or captive who was handcuffed with nonstandard handcuffs, or are called to a house to free someone from, erm.. evening activities that went wrong because a key was lost or only the wrong key was accessible and thus useless. Plus situations, particularly abroad, where abductions of tourists have happened and someone might want to free them self. What ever the situation is, a TOOOL Ultimate Handcuff Key is the solution to having a single key that is the most compatible with the most number of handcuffs available on this planet.

Note, the 0.3mm slit is the minimum width, it can be up to a 1mm gap or smaller. Plus the 5.5mm needs to be very very very slightly filed to be approx 5.48mm in order to successfully operate British police TCH handcuffs and HIATT handcuffs, due to their design where some metal can in many cases take up room in the keyway.

If you can get either a standard Smith & Wesson, Alcyon or Yuil key, the chances are you can use tools to file and cut the key down to fit these dimensions. It requires some work and accurate measuring (and testing if possible) but once completed you have a very compatible key. Although this key is not best suited to be your go-to key if you have triple pawl handcuffs like UK police ones, because it requires a technique in order to catch all 3 pawl bars with the shortened key. This is an "In case of emergency, break glass" kind of key. A key to keep as a backup. However if you have single or double pawl handcuffs it would probably work just as well as your regular key. Only you would know, by testing it.
