📋 *𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆* 📋
Some scholars attribute it to very ancient historical origins, tracing it back to the Phoenician period, from which the name of Marath would have derived.
Others argue that it also had Etruscan origins.

From the 13th century until its annexation to the kingdom of Italy, Marta had a troubled history: disputed between neighboring states and powerful families, she passed from one domination to another undergoing the inevitable and painful hardships.

Following these events, the Prefects of Vico, the Lords of Bisenzio, the cities of Orvieto and Viterbo, the mercenary captains Fra 'Moriale and Angelo da Lavello known as Tartaglia took turns in the government of the country.

Later it was owned by the Orsini and Farnese families, who alternated in the government of the country, until, in 1537, Marta was included in the Duchy of Castro, established by Pope Paul III for his son Pierluigi, and remained there until its destruction, in 1649, by the papal troops of Pope Innocent X Pamphili.

Returned under the jurisdiction of the Apostolic Chamber, Martha remained in the possession of the Holy See until the unification of Italy, except for two short periods, in which it was granted in emphyteusis to the Marquis Pietro della Fargna (1788) and to the Polish prince Stanislao Poniatowsky. .

In 1927 it was detached from the province of Rome and assigned to the newly established province of Viterbo.
