Saving Fallingwater: 20 Years of Preserving Wright’s Masterwork | John Matteo, PE, FAAR

Engineer John A. Matteo discusses how innovative preservation approaches have been implemented to overcome the unique challenges of preserving Fallingwater, a local and international landmark that’s now on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

John has played an integral role in the ongoing preservation of Fallingwater for more than 20 years. As part of Robert Silman's team, he helped to prevent the possible collapse of the house's cantilevers through the installation of an elegant post-tensioning solution in the early 2000s. Since that time, John has consulted on a range of preservation projects that require his structural engineering expertise. John is the principal of 1200 Architectural Engineers, PLLC located in Alexandria, VA.

ABOUT FALLINGWATER:
Fallingwater is hailed internationally as a masterpiece of 20th century architecture and is Frank Lloyd Wright’s most recognized example of the harmonious union of art, architecture and nature. Entrusted to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy in 1963, this dramatically cantilevered house over a waterfall was designed in 1935 for its natural setting and inscribed to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2019.
