Okay, after the Pike tribute, which was positive and inspiring, here comes my first tribute specifically about an anti-hero - Let there be fire was about an antagonist group, but they are surely not nearly as complicated as Ozaki Toshio. I finished Shiki around a month ago: it's one of the best written vampire horror stories I've ever read. It is not exactly scary, but it is certainly disturbing, and really dark, with a lot of moral questions, that won't let you go.
Toshio is one of the main characters, the young doctor at the clinic in Sotoba village, where the story takes place. He is a talented, smart person, who might have a pretty bad attitude, but all in all, cares greatly for his patients and the people of the village. When the vampires start to attack, he makes a decision, that is literally unacceptable morally - it gives him an edge, to fight, and try to protect the people, but as the story progresses, fear and brutality complete takes over everything, and that decision ultimately leads to Toshio's downfall, inability to control the chaos, and finally to the destruction of the village. This video's structure not linear - the present is the hunt itself, which is led by Toshio at the beginning, but slowly gets out of hand, while we get flashbacks for the past, what were his motivations, how he fought, and what decisions he made that led to the current situation.
Why "Get up"? This song from All Good Things, could seem like a song of self-empowerment at first, but it has a really dark and chaotic rythm, with some really disturbing lines... and also it is practically turning into screaming by the end. When I thought on it, it sounded like a song of pointless struggle... where someone tries to get up again and again, tries to fight more, but loses despite giving everything. So as the song turns more and more disturbing, Toshio loses control, and as it turns to screaming, he completely loses the fight itself.
