Welcome to the Assessing Institutional Readiness module of the Portage RDM Institutional Strategies Series. This video, An Overview of Available Assessment Models, is the first of four videos in this module.
The process of creating an institutional research data management strategy can be complicated. Assessment models and tools can help you determine what steps to take in the process, whether you are just starting out or already have an institutional RDM strategy in place.
An assessment model allows you to evaluate your institution’s maturity and organizational readiness. There are several different assessment models and tools available; in this video, we will be looking at two tools in particular.
Using an established assessment model to evaluate the state of RDM on your campus can be a helpful way to approach the process of institutional self-evaluation.
You can get right to work assessing the state of RDM at your institution, instead of having to come up with an evaluation plan yourself.
Assessment models were created specifically for higher education to help you work collaboratively with relevant stakeholders, take stock of your current services, and identify areas for future growth and development.
This will allow you to identify areas of expertise as well as gaps so that you know where to concentrate your efforts.
A well known assessment tool is the Digital Curation Centre’s RISE model.
The RISE model measures 21 institutional capabilities across 10 research support areas. Based on your institution’s needs, you can choose which areas best represent your RDM practices.
The RISE model reflects modern RDM practices and allows for a high level of flexibility and versatility in institutional RDM assessment.
Building on the RISE model, SPARC Europe has created an additional model.
The model enables you to create three different radar charts to visualize
• the breadth of your institution’s RDM offerings;
• the range of tailored services offered;
• and to what extent your institution is sector-leading in RDM.
You can use the SPARC tool to support Institutional Strategy components such as:
● Research data advocacy activities,
● Benchmarking,
● Policy development,
● Service development,
● Training, and,
● Self-assessment.
