India reported 1,761 deaths from COVID-19 overnight, its highest daily toll, with large parts of the country now under lockdown, as the country battles a second wave that has left people fighting for hospital beds, oxygen, and medicines.

In this hospital in New Delhi it’s two to a bed. The numbers of dead keep on rising with India reporting its highest daily toll with 1,761 deaths recorded overnight.

On Tuesday, the health ministry reported its sixth day straight of over 200,000 new infections – the world’s highest.

In the west of the country this mosque has been turned in to a coronavirus care center to meet demand.

Boris Johnson cancelled his trip to India and slapped the country on the travel red list over concerns about the spread of a "double mutant" variant.

Although it is not yet classified a variant of concern like Brazil or South African strains , the fact the Indian variant contains multiple mutations from the original SARS CoV-2 makes it much less easy to predict.

Two of the mutations seen in the India strain could make dodge vaccines much easier than earlier variants, while a third mutation could make it much easier to transmit.
