The deepest hole ever dug by humans is the Kola Superdeep Borehole in Russia, which reached a depth of 7.5 miles or 12 kilometers. This project took over 20 years to complete and required the use of some of the most advanced drilling equipment available.

But why can't we dig deeper than this? The main limitation is the heat and pressure that increases as we dig deeper into the earth's crust. At around 10 kilometers below the surface, the temperature reaches over 1000 degrees Celsius and the pressure can be over 300 times greater than at sea level.
