In this video Visit Virginia City Montana Ghost Town And The Legend of 3-7-77 from The Montana Style We explore Virginia City Montana, Virginia City was designated as the new territorial capital of Montana in 1865 when Alder Gulch had gathered most of Montana's population!

At its peak, 10,000 people flooded the area named "Fourteen-mile City", for the numerous settlements that lined the gulch.

Virginia City became the largest settlement with an estimated population of 5,000 by mid-1864.

Virginia City and nearby Nevada City became known as the site of the richest gold strike in the rocky mountains.

In the first three years alone, an estimated, $30 million worth of gold was removed from the gulch!

During the early years of the territory, there was no secure way to transport wealth and as lawlessness increased, The Montana vigilantes were formed and the legend of the 3-7-77 was born

Over a course of approximately six weeks between December 1863 and February 1864,

Montana vigilante companies located, arrested, and executed suspected members of the Plummer road agent gang in Bannack, Virginia City, and Hellgate, Montana.
