Rolling Green Pastures, Expansive Woods and the Winding Musquodoboit River | Middle Musquodoboit, Nova Scotia, Canada

Otis and I, along with a couple of good friends, took advantage of another great weather day here in Nova Scotia to explore a little around the area of Middle Musquodoboit.

The village of Middle Musquodoboit is located on the Musquodoboit River, about 23 miles southeast of Truro. The name is the anglicized version of the native name “Mooskuduboogenek.” The native name was Natkamkik “the river extends uphill”. William Guild, from Scotland, is reported to have been the first white settler in Middle Musquodoboit receiving a grand of land dated March 1, 1787. About 1800 John Layton settled in the area as well as Johnson Kaulback. A tailor, Peter Clark, and the road on which he lived was called “Thimble Street.” Alexander McCurdy came from Onslow in 1813.

According to school records, Middle Musquodoboit was called Middle Settlement. The first school was built and commenced on February 1, 1817. A second school was built before 1860. As the pupils increased, the community built a larger school of two rooms. A third school was built about 1894 and a third room added. A fourth, a brick building, was built in 1964.

John Layton donated land to erect the first Presbyterian Church in the autumn of 1814, located in the centre of Pioneer Cemetery. A second church was dedicated December 1869 and later became the Middleton United Church after 1925. In 1830 Holy Trinity Church was built on LaPrairie Farm, Colonel Gladwin’s estate in Middle Musquodoboit. In 1847, the first Congregational Minister arrived in this area. At this time the Presbyterians and Congregationalists shared the same meeting house on alternate Sundays. The Methodists began here in 1855. The Wesleyan Methodist Chapel was built in 1856 on a corner of the Hillside Cemetery. The Church records of 1865 refer to Middle Musquodoboit as Laytonville, Centre Musquodoboit as Kentville, Taylor Settlement, Little River (Elderbank). In 1925 Presbyterians and Methodists formed the United Church of Canada.

In 1851 there was in Musquodoboit, St. Mary’s and Shubenacadie some 53 officers and eleven hundred men sufficient to have five companies. Lt. Colonel Henry Arthur Gladwin was officer in command of 5th Halifax Regiment Militia. His son, Lt. Col. A.S. Gladwin, took command until the militia disbanded in 1868.

The first Bank was in the room built on the side of Hugh Kaulback’s home. The second Bank was built in 1920 by Joseph Holman. The third Bank was opened October 18, 1982. The Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital, a Red Cross Output Hospital, opened its doors March 29, 1948. In July of 1915 Musquodoboit celebrated “The Centenary of Presbyterianism in the Musquodoboit Valley, 1815-1915.” The Community Herald was first published in May 1927. The railway station was built about 1916. The Oddfellows’ Hall was built in 1928.

Continue to keep well everyone, and God bless!
