Heinrich Himmler had three children. The first child was Gudrun Himmler who died in 2018. Her mother was Margarethe Himmler, the wife of the Reichsfuhrer SS. Margarethe Himmler was seven years older than her husband and it had been her money which had financed them whilst he was trying to make a political career. She was said to be a bossy woman who was constantly complaining and nagging and there was no doubt who was in charge at home. In the mid 1930s, Hedwig Potthast came to work for Himmler, and at some stage they began to have a relationship. She was completely different to Margarethe Himmler with a much easier going character and does not appear to have nagged him. We can surmise that Margarethe Himmler knew about this relationship. Most historians think that she became aware of her husband’s other woman around 1940 – 1941 but I would suggest it was earlier. In 1937 Margarethe Himmler had given Hedwig Potthast doilies and sweets as a Christmas present but by the following year she was no longer on the Christman present list. We can imagine how she must have felt about her husband being with this woman who was 19 years younger than her and in her diary she wrote about how unhappy she was and that her husband no longer came home. Despite this, Margarethe Himmler did try to contact Hedwig Potthast after the war. These attempts were rebuffed.
Himmler had two children with Hedwig Potthast,a girl, Nanette Dorothea and a boy, Helge.
In June 1938, Joachim Peiper had become an adjutant to Heinrich Himmler. He probably met Hedwig Potthast around this time as well as Sigurd Hinrichsen whom he married on 26 June 1939 in an SS ceremony with Himmler as the guest of honour. Sigurd Peiper then went to live in Rottach-Egern, Upper Bavaria in 1940 near Himmler's second residence where she was able to maintain friendly contact with Hedwig Potthast.
At the end of the war, Himmler was dead and Joachim Peiper was in prison. Times were tough and in 1953, Potthast took the children to near Baden-Baden where she shared a bungalow with her friend Sigurd Peiper until her husband was released from Landsberg prison in 1956. Hedwig Potthast got married again and the children took the surname of her husband. Helge lived with his mother in Baden-Baden until she died in 1994. Helge had a medical condition and required care which is probably why he stayed with his mother. Several years after the death of his mother, a journalist made a request to see Hedwig Potthast’s estate. This was refused by Helge’s lawyer who further added "a request that his client not be contacted again,". He died on 2 August 2005 at the age of 63. The daughter was Nanette Dorothea. Like her brother, she used the surname of her step father. She studied medicine and worked as a doctor in northern Germany. She died on 13 May 2000. Historian Jens Westemeier said that she was a nice friendly person. Neither of the children had any children of their own.
