The Indian Ministry of Finance has introduced a major change in banking rules to make financial security simpler and more effective. Account holders can now nominate up to 4 people for their bank accounts, lockers, or safe custody items, replacing the old single-nominee system.

This new rule ensures that after the account holder’s demise:

Family members or legal heirs can easily claim the funds.
Legal disputes over inheritance are minimized.
Nominees can receive their share without long procedural delays.

You can also assign percentage shares to each nominee. For example, 50% to spouse and 25% each to two children. Banks will follow this allocation automatically. The locker rules have also been updated to include priority-based nominee claims—if the first nominee is unavailable, the next in line can claim the asset.
