Whitefish Point Lighthouse, Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum & The Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial
The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum, located at Michigan’s Whitefish Point Light-Station, is approximately 1.5 hours drive from the Mackinac Bridge. With more than 200 shipwrecks lying in the immediate vicinity, the area is known as Lake Superior’s Shipwreck Coast. The museum features top quality exhibits of shipwreck artifacts, artwork, shipwreck models, new exhibits, and lifelike mannequins. Explorer the Lightkeeper’s Quarters and the Lifeboat Station Surfboat House. The bell of the famous steamer Edmund Fitzgerald is on display and serves as a memorial to her crew. The famous Whitefish Point Light Tower is open for tours, with all fees benefiting its restoration. The museum is open every day, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from May 1 to October 31.

The story of the Edmund Fitzgerald doesn't start here at the shipwreck museum. The ship was launched in 1958 and at the time became the raining "Queen of the Lakes" as the largest ship on the Great Lakes at the time at 729ft. But, the story of the Fritzgerald's fate with Whitefish point began in the early morning hours of November 9, 1975, as a low-pressure system began to take shape in the southern plains as it made its way towards the Great Lakes.

During that time, the Edmund Fitzgerald and another vessel, the Arthur M. Anderson, were leaving port to make their way east towards the soo locks and on their way to the lower Great Lakes.

On November 10, 1975, the Anderson reported receiving hurricane-force winds exceeding 75 knots. Shortly after the captain of the Fitzgerald radioed that they had lost both radars, and was taking on heavy seas over the deck in one of the worst storms he had ever encountered. The Fitzgerald was in the middle of a super storm as it was approaching the coastline of White Fish Point.

The last communication took place as the Anderson asked how the ship was weathering the storm and the Fitzgerald replied, “We are holding our own. Shortly after the Fitzgerald broke apart and sank into the icy cold waters 525' to the bottom of Lake Superior joining those before her and along with it her the entire crew of 29 men
